Cleveland State President Emeritus John Flower passed away Thursday morning, May 12, in his Shaker Heights home at the age of 90. Dr. Flower led Cleveland State as the University's fourth President from 1988 to 1992.
Dr. Flower joined Cleveland State in 1973, first as Vice President for Academic Affairs and later as the University's first Provost. He was named President of the University in 1988.
During his four years as President, Dr. Flower forged relationships throughout the Greater Cleveland community in ways that helped propel the University's students to the forefront of engaged learning. Through his vision and foresight, CSU launched the 17th/18th Street Block Project – an important effort that enhanced the city's economic development. His vision flourishes today with a campus transformation and a myriad of new programs and partnerships emerging throughout the community.
Under President Flower, the Convocation Center (now Wolstein Center) was completed. The state-of-the-art Music and Communication Building was opened, featuring two majestic concert halls. The building still serves as the heart of CSU's thriving music program.
A generous supporter of numerous initiatives from music programs to student scholarships and faculty research, Dr. Flower was a long-time member of the Cleveland State University Foundation, helping to raise funds and direct advancement strategy.
A world-renowned pianist and music teacher for more than half a century, Dr. Flower earned two master of music degrees in piano and music theory, as well as a Ph.D. in musicology – all from the University of Michigan. He also studied at the Conservatoire Americain in Fontainebleau, France, and has performed concerts throughout the world.
As a world traveler, he remained committed to bettering life in Cleveland through dedicated service to civic and cultural organizations. He spent eight years as Executive Director of the Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education.
Dr. Flower's distinguished career was marked by intellect, talent and passion for music and higher education.
Founded in 1964, Cleveland State University is a public research institution that provides a dynamic setting for engaged learning. With an enrollment of more than 17,000 students, 8 colleges and approximately 200 academic programs, CSU was again chosen for 2011 as one of America's Best Colleges by U.S. News & World Report.
