Cleveland State Law Students Place Second in National Tax Competition

A two-person team from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University placed second in the nation in the American Bar Association's Law Student Tax Challenge this month in Boca Raton, Fla.

Among 95 teams, C-M Law students Caryn Gross and Michael Tangry and their coach, Professor Deborah Geier, placed second only behind a team from Samford University. This month, finalists presented oral arguments before a panel of distinguished tax lawyers at the Bar Association's 2011 Midyear Meeting.

The Law Student Tax Challenge was developed by the Bar Association's Young Lawyers Forum and is designed to reflect everyday tax issues. The contest features J.D. and master's divisions, both of which compete in two-person teams that research tax issues and then submit technical memoranda and client letters with their solutions. The teams' written submissions are judged by tax practitioners from across the country. Teams with the best written submissions are chosen to present their strategies before judges at during the Midyear Meeting.

Other top contenders in this year's J.D. Division included William and Mary, University of Kentucky, University of Florida and Liberty University. The competition also included a master's of law division lead by a team from Northwestern University.

With nearly 400,000 members, the American Bar Association is the largest voluntary professional membership organization in the world. As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education and works to build public understanding around the world.
