John and Annie Glenn Bestowed with Honorary CSU Degrees

Cleveland State was honored Friday to host a special tribute to Senator John Glenn and the 50th anniversary of the first American to orbit Earth.  Approximately 4,000 people attended the event at CSU’s Wolstein Center, Celebrating John Glenn’s Legacy: 50 years of Americans in Orbit.

The event included Senator Glenn and his wife Annie, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and a host of NASA astronauts, public officials, invited guests, students and members of the public chosen from an online lottery.

Before the program, Cleveland State President Ronald Berkman bestowed honorary degrees to Senator and Annie Glenn for their extraordinary public service and their contributions to science, technology and humanities.

“As a native Ohioan, a marine, an astronaut and a U.S. Senator, John Glenn has become an indelible symbol of courage and strength by overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds,” said Berkman, who presented John Glenn with a Doctor of Science. “He is unquestionably a great American hero.”

President Berkman then granted Annie Glenn a Doctor of Humane Letters.

“Annie Glenn, in her own right, has led a life of exemplary community service based on her endearing interest in programs for children, the elderly and the physically challenged,” Berkman added. “She and John are an inspiration to us all.”
